Grade 4: Pulley Power and Gear Genius
This educational experience focuses on pulleys and gears, essential simple machines. Students will identify different types and understand their operating principles. Using artifacts from our collection, participants will explore the historical significance and evolution of pulleys and gears. In a hands-on engineering activity, students will build a gear train to grasp gear mechanics and motion and build two different types of pulleys to provide practical insights into force and how pulleys facilitate movement. Our program promotes historical appreciation, hands-on skills, and critical thinking, empowering students with knowledge of simple machines and their applications.
Grade 7/8: The Lime Capital: Environmental Impacts and History of Quarrying in Beachville
In this program, students will learn about the history and development of the quarry industry in the Beachville district. They will understand the benefits of using natural resources, like limestone, in producing products we use daily. Students will examine the environmental risks of quarrying. They will learn how quarrying has affected the environment by focusing on deforestation and pollution, thus understanding human activity’s impact on the local environment; this will be manifested in the “Build Your Own Aquifer” activity. Students will critically think about how they can help protect the environment for the future and form a sense of belonging through learning local history.
