Nearly 120 years after his death, Zorra-born missionary George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901) is still revered in Taiwan for his many lasting educational, religious, medical and cultural contributions. For many, he is a present day icon of Taiwanese nationalism.
Considered a rebel at the time by church authorities, Mackay is now widely described as one of the most remarkable missionaries of the late Victorian era.
The reasons behind his powerful legacy are explored by Michael Stainton, Research Associate, York University Centre for Asian Studies.
Location: Program room, Beachville District Museum, 584371 Beachville Road (west side if Beachville, at Domtar Line).
