Butter Churn Picnic
South-West Oxford and Zorra Townships are home to numerous century-old dairy farms and boast rich histories deeply intertwined with dairy-related industries. Many villages and hamlets, such as Bennington, Mt. Elgin, Dunn’s Corners, Brownsville, and Oliver, once had their own cheese and butter creameries. Join us in celebrating Oxford County’s dairy heritage with our Butter Churn Picnic Experience, set in Oxford County, the Dairy Capital of Canada. During this experience, you’ll learn how to make butter while discovering the history of dairy and butter production in the county. You’ll crank a 1922 butter churn and use locally crafted wooden tools to mould your butter. Explore photos of historic local creameries and view butter-related artifacts. After your butter-making session, unwind with a picnic on our scenic grounds. Spread your freshly churned butter over warm, local bread, and enjoy it alongside local honey and jam.
This experience centres on rural businesses and highlights their distinct value and innovation in regions that are known for their agricultural past. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our locally sourced ingredients and a 100% waste-free experience, honouring both the past and a greener future.
